Creating Hope: Sunday
Sunday March 21, 2021
Created by Pastor Drew Tucker

2nd Samuel 6 (NIV)
“David and all Israel were celebrating with all their might before the LORD, with castanets, harps, lyres, timbrels, sistrums and cymbals.”
Devotion
If we ever sat next to one another on a train, I would almost certainly annoy you. Not with speech; after all, I’m an introvert at heart. But with my constant, some have even said incessant, drumming. You see, I’m a drummer. I’ve always wanted to be a drummer. My mom made me play piano for three years to see if that would redirect my percussive desires, but she had no such luck. Soon, there was a Pearl drum set in the basement, with black-wrapped shells and Sabian cymbals, resounding a joyful noise through the house. Joyful for me, at least.
But believe it or not, and this might be hard for some of my former bandmates to believe, I didn’t play the drums just for volume. You see, I find a certain beauty in rhythm, which is why if I’m sitting still on a train or on a plane, I’ll almost always be experimenting with some kind of irregular beat, working at keeping steady time, or wondering if there’s a better way to support the rest of the music. For me, drums are about the beauty of the whole piece of music, and the very best way I found that expressed was as a drummer in worship bands. That’s how I created hope for me and for congregations as a traveling musician and a worship leader in college
You, too, have something that might be misunderstood on its own but is beautiful in concert with your fellow humans. Use it not to add to the dissonance so common to our world, but to bring hope to others and to yourself, creating a feeling of joyful anticipation that we so desperately need in this weary season.
Prayer
Good and gracious God, help us to find hope in this weary season. Amen.
