John 16:33 (NIV)

“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

Devotion

One of my favorite songs right now is “SCAR” by Ashton Irwin. In his song, he sings about how the world can be painful and harsh at times, but he encourages the listener to keep going. Irwin opens the song with a call to God about how he wishes God would show him the way he is meant to go. He sings about the struggles just to keep going forward in life when it seems there is so little to look forward to in life.

We all feel that the world is against us at times. We see pain and suffering in the world that seems to only be getting worse and we do not have enough energy to fight it. Even with all the struggles that we face in our lives and world, we can still find hope to keep moving forward. As Irwin sings in his song, “There’s no need to run and hide when the world leaves a scar.” We can keep moving forward when the world hurts us. Faith in God provides hope to move forward and bring change to the world. Again, Irwin sings, “It is a painful thing to try.” Sometimes it feels easier to give up. Hope acknowledges that struggle and helps us keep going anyway.

Hope in God does not mean that life will be easy but provides us the ability to keep going when everything around us seems to be falling apart. I think “SCAR” tells us that message of hope in ways we can understand and relate to.

Prayer

Good and gracious God, help us to find hope in this weary season. Amen.
