Exodus 15:20–21 (NRSV)

20 Then the prophet Miriam, Aaron’s sister, took a tambourine in her hand; and all the women went out after her with tambourines and with dancing. 21 And Miriam sang to them:

“Sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously;

horse and rider he has thrown into the sea.”

Devotion

This passage from scripture follows the Isrealites immediately post-escaping Egypt via the Red Sea. In this moment of exhilaration, Miriam lets the relief bubble over into a reverence of thanking God that at least for this moment, hope has prevailed. I don’t know about y’all, but when I’m feeling down or unmotivated or stressed, I’ll blast some music and dance. There is a lovely Florence + the Machine song called “Shake It Out” which does wonders to cleanse my soul. Miriam knew what was up, just as Florence Welch does, “it’s hard to dance with the devil on your back so shake him off.”

Today carve out some time to listen to your favorite song and let your body groove. Feel the hope as it cannot help but bubble over inside of you just as it did for Miriam. When hope cannot be felt…create it!
