Isaiah 54:9–10 (NIV)

9“To me this is like the days of Noah,

when I swore that the waters of Noah would never again cover the earth.

So now I have sworn not to be angry with you,

never to rebuke you again.

10 Though the mountains be shaken

and the hills be removed,

yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken

nor my covenant of peace be removed,”

says the Lord, who has compassion on you.

Devotion

In this passage, Noah is mentioned. Many people are familiar with the biblical story of Noah and his family. God told Noah that he was going to make it rain and flood the earth. God then told Noah to build an ark and to put two of every kind of animal and his family on the ark. I was in my junior year of undergraduate when the pandemic hit, and I had to leave college to finish the rest of the semester online. On the outside, I appeared optimistic. I would post messages and videos on my Facebook weekly, and would stay connected to many of the communities I had been a part of. However, deep down I was devastated. I had so many plans for the rest of the academic school year. I felt like the hills had been removed and the mountains had departed in my life. Every day was scary and unpredictable, and I felt incredibly anxious about what was to come. Maybe, what I experienced is relatable on some level to those reading this devotion. I believe that Noah even felt this on some level well on the ark. I find great beauty in this passage because even though the mountains and hills depart, whether physically or metaphorically, in my own life God does not leave me. God’s love is showing up no matter how I feel.

Prayer

God of the journey, even when we feel far apart, hold us close through your love. Amen.
