Romans 15:13 (NIV)

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

Devotion

In this unprecedented time, it’s easy to get caught in the web of our individualistic culture. It’s been easy to embrace “doing it ourselves” in a time where we have had to socially distance to protect our neighbors. Within our individualistic culture comes a pressure that is both put on us and we put on ourselves; sometimes, this pressure is to kindle and carry hope for our communities in this weary season.

But the problem with the pressures we put on ourselves to carry hope for our communities is that it is not God’s call for us. Instead, the work of kindling hope is found in our relationship with God and with one another. Paul says, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” God is the One who is coming alongside us co-kindling hope for and with us. As we continue to journey through this week embodying practices that kindle hope within us, may we be reminded that this work of kindling hope is not on us and us alone.

Today, reach out to someone who has offered you hope along your journey. Maybe it’s an old friend, a past youth group leader, a teacher, or a family member. May getting in touch with those who have offered you hope in your past, offer you a practice that kindles hope within you today.

Prayer

Good and gracious God, help us to find hope in this weary season. Amen.
