Matthew 5:14–16 (NIV)
14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
Devotion
As we journey through what gives us hope, let us be reminded of what gives others hope. In Matthew Chapter 5, Jesus is speaking to the crowd about goodness and being a support for others. Fulfill others, be a guide for their goals, be the person who listens in silence. Recently, there have been changes to service projects because of Covid-19. They are still possible but with restrictions on who can participate, where they can occur, and who can be supported. Even with restrictions, that should not stop you from lending a helping hand. God gives us many opportunities to be giving, and when we show up in various ways for our community, the love of God’s creation shines bright. You have to become your own light and the only person who can find that is you. The statement is better said than done because it takes strength and passion. Light is a guide, it helps others see their own path.
As you reflect on the reading, journal ways you can reach out to the community. Take a few moments of silence to think about your passions and what giving means to you. Have a conversation with God on where you see yourself giving to others.
Prayer
Good and gracious God, help us to find hope in this weary season. Amen.
