Philippians 3:17–20

17 Brothers and sisters, join in imitating me, and observe those who live according to the example you have in us. 18 For many live as enemies of the cross of Christ; I have often told you of them, and now I tell you even with tears. 19 Their end is destruction; their god is the belly; and their glory is in their shame; their minds are set on earthly things. 20 But our citizenship is in heaven, and it is from there that we are expecting a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Devotion

Recently, my roommate and I have been watching all of the Spiderman movies from start to finish. While watching these movies, you can see the different transitions that Spiderman has as a superhero. At the start he is seen as this amazing hero who is saving the city. Eventually, people begin to hate him because of a newspaper post, and he is now the enemy. Luckily, he once again becomes the hero and people continue to look up to him. We all have heroes. We look to be like them and strive to do good just like they have done. We try to imitate them. We want to be them.

We usually don’t imitate our heroes because they are divine, and we are just mere humans. We imitate them because we see them as good. In reality, we ought to strive to imitate others to the extent that they imitate Jesus. We should be heroes to others because we strived to imitate Jesus. In our reading for today, Paul asks us to join him in imitating Jesus and live as examples to others. We are invited to be a part of a community that lives through the actions and words of Jesus. We are not only invited to be like Jesus, but to invite others to join us also. By imitating Jesus, who is our hero, we are also growing ourselves to be heroes to others. Just like Spiderman, we are invited to be heroes to others just like Jesus is a hero to us. Uncle Ben once said, “With great power comes great responsibility.” With the power of imitating Jesus, we have great responsibility to be Jesus-like to others.

Prayer

God our Hero, help us to imitate you and show your love to others.
